The "fish" has been one symbol that Christians have used to identify themselves as followers of Jesus since the 1st or 2nd century AD. Jesus spoke of disciples of being fishers of men (those who would go out and preach the gospel, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit according to Matthew 28 and Mark 16:16). The fish as a symbol for Christians also has some other unique characteristics, for example, the tail of the fish forms a cross (Jesus died on a Roman cross to bear the penalty of mankind's sin...so that all could be saved from their sins).
